Why this site? Well, from time to time we all need to show off a bit, so I guess you could say this site is where I show off my creative endeavors. My name is Ed Brandt, owner of Brandt Design, where I dedicate most of my days running a full service design firm. Time spent sitting behind my desk working on one of many projects; logos and identity, brochures, mailers, signage, billboards, bus wraps, books, annual reports. You name it, if it needs to be designed I’ve probably tried it at least once.
But there’s another side to me, one that allows me to fulfill my personal creative expression. I graduated university with a fine arts degree and ever since have enjoyed the exploration and freedom of art and creativity. First and foremost I would consider myself a contemporary painter of the fine arts. But there’s more, I like spreading my “creative wings” and expressing my creativity in other ways. For example, I also love photography; many cameras, many styles, it’s just another outlet. I’ve shown some of my work, others I’ve created just for the experience, but no matter the purpose it’s all in the name of creativity.
So indulge me as I show off just a bit. Take a look around, enjoy what you find and feel free to send me you thoughts…
I love painting. I love to play with minimalism, geometry and texture. My creative process is a visceral one. I enjoy the ability to experiment and develop my pieces while achieving my intended goal of simplicity. At first glance the finished artwork may seem minimal in appearance but upon closer inspection you’ll discover geometry and texture that expose a deeper process. There’s more to my work than is first obvious. In a world that can be over stimulating with all its visual clutter, I like to streamline my ideas and find an aesthetic balance that offers a visual experience without “saying” too much.
I enjoy looking at the world through the lens of a camera, it has a way of forcing you to view things differently. Capturing images constrained to a rectangle can be as liberating as it is challenging. I experiment with a wide variety of cameras working in no particular style, allowing myself the freedom to just have fun. Whether it’s a photograph from a trip, an abstract macro shot or some other photographic endeavor, photography is a wonderful form of creative expression.
